Technorati’s got some catching up to do. Take a look at their Alexa stats, and you’ll see a huge drop. Alexa reports about 15% down over the last few months, but I bet it will trend down even faster now.

Why?

If you’re a blogger you probably already know. About 2 weeks ago, Wordpress 2.3 was released. There are all sorts of nice new features, like tag support, update checking for your plugins, etc. What does this have to do with Technorati?

Anyone who runs a Wordpress blog is probably used to this routine. Log in and you get a "Dashboard" which lists, among other things, your incoming links from other blogs. This *used to be* populated from Technorati. So anytime you would log into your blog, you’d see backlinks coming in, and as many bloggers do, you’d go to each of the sites, have a look around, and get an idea where and why they linked you. If you clicked on "More" it would take you to your Technorati authority page.

Over the past few months, though, bloggers have been talking about how irrelevant your "authority" really is. These comments must have gotten heard by the Wordpress crew, because the incoming links section on you Wordpress blog is now populated by the "Google Blog Search."

Personally I liked it better when it used Technorati. It seemed more social. Now it’s just like a portal to a search engine. I can definitely see how the information is much more relevant to bloggers trying to stand out in the SERPs, though, and that’s what really matters.

Technorati must be panicking at this point. Now, don’t get me wrong. Their daily traffic is still pretty huge, but a downtrend like this will put a damper on any business. It will be very interesting to see what they do to try and regain their authority (ha-ha).
