Everybody and their mother have an eBay account now. eBay’s 2006 annual report stated that there were 222-million registered members on eBay, and about 74% of those users were active within the previous 12 months.
Seems like eBay is really trying to coax less tech-savvy users to register by offering up to $50 if you can refer new active members. New users get 3 free listings, and you get $5 for every referral, up to $50.
Not a bad deal, but I’m hard pressed to think of anyone I know who isn’t already on eBay. Are they really still out there?
Every once in a while I’ll run into one of those paranoid cavemen who are so unnecessarily frightened of putting their credit card number “on the internet for everyone to see.” But those are the same people who think that if they give someone their social security number, someone is going to somehow gain access to all of their assets and leave them penniless on a street corner.
But that’s about it. Everyone else I know who has the capacity to understand e-mail has already at least registered on eBay. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even shop anymore. Besides groceries, I buy everything I need on either eBay or Amazon.
